| Self-Help Advice |
- Most importantly, avoid the causes of back pain;
- Pay attention to posture when sitting, standing or walking;
- Learn correct lifting techniques;
- Remain active, even when suffering back pain - inaction will rarely cure the problem;
- Apply a cold compress (e.g. a bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel) to the area of inflammation and then heat (e.g. heat pad, hot water bottle or hot shower) after a few days to ease the muscular pain.

| Over-the-Counter Medication |

If in doubt, discuss over-the-counter medication with your pharmacist.
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken to ease the pain. If you are over 65, discuss the use of ibuprofen with your pharmacist;
- Anti-inflammatory creams, gels or sprays may also be used to ease the pain.
